Rick DeGroff’s RV-14A | Milton, WV RV-14A #140623

Rick DeGroff RV-14A became a flying machine this month, reminding us that “the effort is worth it.” Here’s his story:

On November 1, 2025, I had my first flight in the Vans RV-14A that I started in May 2019. This was a “slow-build” and I had no previous airplane building experience prior to starting. At one point or another, I had all of the typical first-time builder emotions. You can be feeling great, motivated and productive on one day and then cry or curse on the next! Today, I was able to confirm that all of the literal blood, sweat and tears are definitely worth it!!

The build itself was (mostly) enjoyable and I’m sure I’ll tackle another one at some point — RV-10, I’m looking at you! I am very pleased with the quality of my build and quite proud of it. I had the typical help from friends, family, and assorted airport bums along the way, but other than the cowling and wheel pants, I did most of it myself. I was blessed to have several mentors at my airport who were always there to help me when I was in a seemingly hopeless predicament or simply looking for guidance.

The first flight was earlier today and as I write this I still cannot get the RV grin off of my face! Van’s did not exaggerate the performance of this model. I literally could not believe the takeoff distance and the speeds that I saw on my first flight. The airplane flew level — hands-off, with no tendency to roll in either direction. There were no “bad” surprises, only a few software settings made on the ground after the first flight.

The RV-4 chase plane was definitely getting out run!

I have the Lycoming IO-390-EXP119 Thunderbolt, Hartzell 74-inch aluminum prop, and a beautiful IFR panel created by Advanced Flight Systems. If you’re near 12V (Ona, WV) come check it out!!

I could not be happier!

Trust me, guys, the effort is worth it!
