| Lighting Considerations Lighting is a major decision when building your RV. It is not required, at least for day VFR flight, to equip your RV with lights. Airplanes without them are lighter, simpler and less expensive. For those who like the option of flying at night, or wish to make themselves more visible, Van's offers several options. These include position and anti-collision light systems manufactured by Whelen Engineering, leaders in aviation lighting for many years. We now offer the newer AeroLEDS™ solid state lighting units. There are landing and taxi lights for wing leading edges and wingtips. Also, several different ways to mount position lights on older (flat top type) wingtips.
The RV-12 has a defined comprehensive lighting system using AeroLEDs, RV-12 LIGHTING KIT, which includes landing, position and strobe lights.
The RV-7/7A, RV-8/8A, RV-9/9A and RV-10 kits have wingtips and rudder fairings that use LIGHTING SYSTEM 6, or the AeroLED equivalent.
- The A600 lamp includes colored wingtip, aft-facing white position lights and a strobe. This system is mounted on the external surface of the wing and meets all of the requirements for position and anti-collision lighting for the old style flat top wing tips only. The AeroLEDS™ Pulsar is equivalent to the A600.
- The A650 contains the colored wingtip position light and a strobe, but the aft-facing white light/strobe must be mounted on the rudder. The A650 lamp assembly can be mounted externally on the wingtip, or mounted within an enclosure on the wingtip. The AeroLEDS™ NS90 is equivalent to the A650.
- The A600 and A650 lights in any of the lighting systems may be substituted by the LED versions, with an appropriate cost increase. At present, there is no LED version of the A500-14 tail light/strobe, other than the AeroLEDS™ Suntail.
